While designing ONDO, a Korean restaurant meaning "temperature," our goal was to create a visually warm space. Inspired by traditional Korean mud houses—once common for their natural insulation—we reimagined this concept in a modern Manhattan setting. Seeking materials that embodied the warmth and texture of mud walls, we discovered handmade terracotta tiles from California. Their natural variations metaphorically echo the organic imperfections of traditional mud walls, which we used to line the banquette niche.
To balance this warmth, we juxtaposed textured slate tiles for a subtle contrast and sense of calm. Layered with millwork, furniture, and lighting that fuse classic Asian architectural lines with mid-century modern influences, ONDO blends East and West seamlessly. The result is a contemporary yet tradition-rooted space that enhances the experience of enjoying authentic Korean flavors.
